Coastal Deck Builder on the NSW South Coast

Plan a deck built for salt air, sloped coastal blocks and holiday-ready entertaining, from the owner who measures, quotes and stays on site.

The NSW South Coast covers a stretch of very different towns, from Shell Cove’s newer marina community to Thirroul and Austinmer’s older beachside cottages between the escarpment and the sand. As a deck builder on the South Coast, Ballard’s Carpentry plans around what each site actually needs: a pool or swim spa, a sloping garden, a covered area, or a more private entertaining space, before construction starts. Lucas Ballard, the owner, estimator and carpenter, measures the site and stays involved through deck construction.

As a deck builder on the South Coast, Ballard’s builds custom composite decks, timber decks, pool and spa decking, pergolas, privacy screens, wall cladding, balustrades and deck lighting. We prioritise projects in Shellharbour, Shell Cove, Kiama, Thirroul and Austinmer, and consider suitable projects further along the coast in Albion Park, Woonona and Gerringong.

If you are planning a project, start with an on-site measure and quote, so the design suits the specific site rather than a generic coastal layout.

Why South Coast Homeowners Choose Ballard’s

The South Coast isn’t one market. Shell Cove is a newer, masterplanned waterfront community built around a marina, while Thirroul and Austinmer are older beachside towns where many decks sit on established cottages squeezed between the escarpment and the beach.

Direct Owner Contact, From Start to Handover: You deal with Lucas Ballard from the first phone call to the final board. He measures the job, prices the materials and stays on the tools through construction.

Award-Winning Craftsmanship: 2023 Australian Trex Pro of the Year, 2023 and 2025 Liverpool City Local Business Awards Service and Trade Finalist, and 2021 Fencing Industry Australia Innovation and Excellence Award for Decorative Screens and Walls.

A Dedicated, Employed Team, Not Subcontracted: Lucas works alongside Ballard’s own employed carpentry team, so the project is never handed to subcontractors partway through.

On coastal sites, that means a subframe and fixings specified for salt air and moisture, not just a standard suburban build.

Custom Decks

Start with movement through the outdoor area: a path from the back door to the garden, a safe route around a pool, a spa cover that needs clearance, or stairs between changing levels, especially common on the sloped coastal blocks around Thirroul and Austinmer. Board direction, borders, balustrading and post positions need to resolve those practical requirements rather than compete with them. We use drawings and, where they help, 3D renders to test the layout before materials are ordered, and the proposal covers access, structural work, drainage, materials and site complications. Clearance, moisture exposure, future access and subframe selection are assessed with salt air and coastal conditions in mind, since that detail matters as much as the finished surface here.

Composite Decking

Composite decking suits South Coast conditions well, resisting the salt and moisture that comes with beachside living without the sanding and staining timber needs. We work with Trex, Millboard, Innowood and selected Eva-Last ranges, and recommend materials according to the project and its exposure rather than repeating supplier claims.

Timber Decking

Timber remains the right choice for some homes and projects, particularly on more sheltered blocks set back from direct coastal exposure. We build timber decks using Spotted Gum and Blackbutt, weighing the look, expected maintenance, budget and construction detail before recommending either material.

Pool and Spa Decks

Before a pool or spa deck is drawn, access needs to be worked through: room to move around the water, steps that sit where they’re useful, and skimmer lids or other service points that may need to stay accessible. We plan integrated steps, privacy screens, wall cladding and lighting with the pool or spa deck, and on suitable projects, coordinate around recessed pool cover systems or HIDE access covers.

Pergolas and Outdoor Living Features

Post positions, roof drainage and the connection back to the home should be worked out with the deck, not after it. We build patio pergolas, including cantilever, louvred and insulated roof systems, and can include privacy screens, wall cladding, balustrading and deck or stair lighting in the same construction plan.

Deck Renovations

An existing deck may suit renovation or an upgrade, but only after the structure beneath the boards has been assessed, which matters more on older coastal properties where salt exposure can affect a subframe faster than it would inland. We check condition, clearance and moisture exposure before recommending whether to retain, alter or replace it.

South Coast Service Areas

Ballard’s prioritises Shellharbour and Shell Cove, Kiama, and Thirroul and Austinmer, and considers suitable projects further along the coast in Albion Park, Woonona and Gerringong.

These towns sit across three separate councils, City of Shellharbour, Kiama Municipal Council and City of Wollongong, so the right approval pathway depends on exactly which town a project is in rather than the South Coast label as a whole. The towns themselves differ just as much: Shell Cove is a newer, masterplanned community built around its marina and golf course, while Thirroul and Austinmer are older beachside towns of established cottages set between the Illawarra escarpment and a patrolled surf beach, and Kiama and Gerringong carry more of a working coastal-town character with their own harbours and headlands. All of it shares the same coastal exposure, so drainage and fixings specified for salt air matter regardless of which town a project sits in.

Most decks and patios across the South Coast still qualify as exempt or complying development under the same statewide rules, but the specific council, and in some cases coastal or foreshore planning controls, need to be confirmed for the exact property before work begins.

Plan Your South Coast Deck Project

The South Coast’s mix of new marina communities and older beachside towns means every project starts from a different site. Start with an on-site measure and quote, and you will deal directly with Lucas Ballard, from that first conversation through to the final board.

FAQs

Does coastal salt air affect deck material choice?
Yes. Composite decking generally handles the salt and moisture in beachside towns like Thirroul and Austinmer well, without the regular maintenance timber needs. Fixings and subframe treatment also need to suit the exposure.
Yes. Many properties in Thirroul and Austinmer are older cottages on sloped blocks between the escarpment and the beach, and we assess the existing structure and site conditions before recommending a new deck, a renovation or an upgrade.
Yes. Shell Cove’s masterplanned streets and Shellharbour’s established suburbs both fall within our priority South Coast area, and we plan decks to suit whichever type of site and block it is.
Cost depends on material, deck size, subframe requirements and site conditions, and coastal exposure or a sloped block can add work a flat inland block does not need. We provide a written proposal after the on-site measure rather than a figure over the phone.
