Ballard’s Carpentry answers questions about its services, materials, and processes.
Ballard’s Carpentry builds custom composite and timber decking, pergolas and covered outdoor structures, pool and spa decking, wall cladding and privacy screens, and balustrades and deck railing. We also handle multi-level and curved decking, deck renovations, and deck lighting as part of a larger project. Ballard’s carries out the carpentry with its own employed team and coordinates specialist trades where the project requires them.
Absolutely. While composite decking is our specialty, we also build pergolas, privacy screening, feature wall cladding, stairs, lighting, planter boxes and complete outdoor living spaces designed to suit your home and lifestyle.
Ballard’s Carpentry works across the South Coast, Camden, Wilton, Denham Court and Harrington Park, with projects also considered across the South Coast and Sutherland Shire. If you are unsure whether your suburb is covered, get in touch and we will let you know.
Yes. Ballard’s Carpentry holds NSW Contractor Licence 327 682C, and residential projects over 20,000 dollars are covered by Home Building Compensation Fund insurance as required under NSW law. Every job is also protected by the statutory warranty periods set out in the Home Building Act 1989.
Approval requirements vary depending on your council, the size of the structure and your specific site, so this is assessed on a project-by-project basis. We can discuss what is likely to be required for your project during your consultation. Get in touch with us directly for guidance specific to your build.

Every project is covered by the statutory warranty periods under the NSW Home Building Act 1989, which is six years for major defects and two years for other defects. The materials we install, including Trex, Millboard, Innowood, Eva-Last, Versiclad and James Hardie, each carry their own manufacturer warranty as well. Visit our Warranty page for links to the relevant brand warranty information.
With more than 500 decks completed and over 20 years of experience, we’ve built a reputation for quality workmanship, honest advice and exceptional customer service. Every project is completed with premium materials, careful attention to detail and a focus on creating outdoor spaces that stand the test of time.
Absolutely. You don’t need to have every detail figured out before getting in touch. Whether you’re starting with a blank canvas or updating an existing outdoor area, we’ll guide you through the process. We’ll help you explore layouts, materials, colours and features to create an outdoor space that suits your home, lifestyle and budget. Together, we’ll turn your ideas into a space you’ll enjoy for years to come.
We install Trex, Millboard, Innowood and Eva-Last Pioneer, and we help you compare them against your budget and site. Trex is our preferred brand for its consistency and long-term performance. Each brand carries its own manufacturer warranty, which we can walk you through before you choose.
Composite decking is designed to resist fading, staining and moisture in a way that suits this area’s mix of harsh sun and heavy rain. The right board and subframe combination matters as much as the brand you choose. We select materials and installation methods suited to your specific site conditions.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, and that’s where we can help. We take the time to explain the differences between Australia’s leading composite decking brands, including Trex, Millboard, Woodevo and more. We’ll compare colours, board profiles, textures, warranties, performance, maintenance requirements and budget, so you can confidently choose the product that best suits your home, lifestyle and investment. We believe the best deck starts with the right advice, not simply recommending the same product for every project.
Every project is unique, so pricing depends on factors such as the size of your deck, the materials selected, site access, subframe requirements and any additional features like pergolas, lighting or screening. We provide a detailed written quote so you know exactly what’s included before work begins.
Both have their benefits, but many homeowners choose composite decking for its low maintenance, long lifespan and resistance to fading, staining and splintering. If you prefer the natural character of timber, we’ll help you compare both options and recommend the best solution for your home and budget.
We commonly work with Spotted Gum and Blackbutt, both popular Australian hardwood species. Each species offers a different colour, grain and durability profile, and we can help you choose based on your home and budget. Timber decking remains a genuine high-end option, not simply a budget alternative to composite.
A timber deck generally needs periodic oiling or staining to maintain its colour and protect it from the weather. How often depends on the species, the finish and how exposed the deck is to sun and rain. We can explain the maintenance schedule for your specific timber choice before construction begins.
Yes, timber decking can be built on sloped or uneven sites using the appropriate subframe and support structure. We assess your site during the quote stage to determine what the ground conditions require. This is the same construction knowledge we bring to composite decking projects.
We work with Lux Cantilever cantilevered pergola systems and Pergolux louvred, opening-roof systems, along with insulated roof options using Versiclad panels. Each system suits a different budget and use case, from a simple shade structure to a climate-controlled outdoor room. We help you choose based on how you plan to use the space year-round.
Approval requirements depend on the size, height and location of the structure, along with your local council’s rules. This can vary between local government areas, so it needs to be assessed for your specific project. Get in touch with us to discuss what your project may require.
Yes, a pergola can often be integrated into an existing deck if the current structure is suitable to support it. We assess the existing frame during a site visit to confirm what is possible. We can often design the pergola to work with your deck’s existing layout and drainage.
Yes, pool decking is one of our core services, and we primarily work around inground pools. We can coordinate more complex integrations, including recessed pool covers, rather than simply installing a rectangular deck around the pool edge. Composite decking is commonly used for these projects due to its overall resistance to moisture and pool chemicals.
Spa and swim-spa decking has become a specialty area for us, and it involves custom decking, integrated access and often privacy screening around the unit. We work with Spa World, a major spa supplier, on many of these projects. Each spa deck is designed around the specific dimensions and access requirements of the unit installed.
Yes, we work with Aussie Undercover on recessed pool cover systems that allow the cover to sit below the surrounding decking. We also use HIDE access covers for skimmer and service points, so they blend into the finished deck. This creates a cleaner, more integrated appearance around the pool.
We install a range of profiles, including castellation, shadow-line and shiplap cladding, along with James Hardie products for certain applications. The right profile depends on the architectural style of your home and the effect you want to achieve. We can show you samples of each profile during your consultation.
Yes, cladding and screening are closely related. Cladding can create a feature wall, screen an exposed area or add privacy around a deck, pergola or pool. The profile and layout depend on the look you want and how the space needs to function.
Fencing is not a standalone service we offer, but boundary work can be included when it forms part of a larger cladding, screening or outdoor living project. If your project involves covering or integrating an existing boundary, we can discuss this during your site visit. This keeps the finished look consistent across your entire outdoor space.
We offer aluminium, timber, glass and cable balustrading, along with the Ultralox system. Each option suits a different look and budget, from a traditional timber rail to glass balustrading. We help you match the balustrade to the overall design of your deck.
Balustrades are generally required under the National Construction Code once a deck reaches a certain height above the ground. The exact height and design requirements can vary depending on your project. We build every balustrade to meet the relevant safety standards for your site.
Aluminium balustrades generally require very little maintenance beyond the occasional clean. They resist corrosion and fading better than many other materials used outdoors. This makes them a popular choice for homeowners who want a long-lasting, low-maintenance balustrade.
