This project for a pool deck in Rooty Hill began after the couple met Ballard’s Carpentry at the Pool & Spa Show, shortly after buying a new pool and deciding to renovate their entire backyard. During the on-site consultation, samples of decking brands and features were shown in the home, and the couple set out what mattered most to them: A minimal, low-maintenance space they could retire in, with a pool cover that worked properly without becoming an eyesore.
The finished pool deck uses Trex Tropical composite decking in Island Mist across two main deck areas, set on a ClickDeck aluminium subframe to suit the low clearance around the pool. An Aussie Undercover recessed pool cover sits flush below deck level, and a HIDE skimmer lid keeps the pool’s service points hidden within the decking rather than sitting on top of it. Three Versiclad pergolas define separate zones for lounging, dining and the outdoor BBQ area, with black NewTechWood castellation cladding tying the spaces together and artificial turf finishing the remaining yard.
The completed backyard gives the couple a genuinely usable retirement space, with the pool as the centrepiece rather than a feature they have to work around. A homeowner planning a similar pool deck can expect the same approach: A subframe suited to the site’s clearance, a pool cover built into the deck rather than bolted on, and pergolas and cladding that turn separate features into one coherent backyard.
